Reasons why Malaysia & Indonesia are Two Neighboring Countries that Buy the French GM400 Alpha Radar

WorldTekhno.comAfter Indonesia bought the GCI radar from France, i.e. the GM400 Alpha, also known as GM400, Malaysia apparently bought the same radar.

Quoted in the 8 December 2023 edition of Defence Security Asia (DSA), Malaysia and France signed a letter of acceptance (LOA) for the Ground Master 400 Alpha (GM400) long-range air defence radar.

Earlier in June 2023, Thales France, through its official website, said Indonesia had purchased the latest variant of the GCI radar, namely the GM400 Alpha, also known as GM400a, which has a longer range and more sophisticated system. On its official website, Indonesia is said to have purchased the latest variant of the GCI radar, namely the GM400 Alpha, also known as GM400a, which has a longer range and a more sophisticated system.

So what is the function of this radar that the two neighbouring countries, Indonesia and Malaysia, are willing to buy it?

The Ground Master 400 Alpha Radar (GM400a) is a long-range air defence radar developed by Thales France. This radar is the latest variant of the GM400 radar that has been in production since the 2000s.

The GM400a has a detection range of up to 515 km, a detection altitude of up to 30,000 metres and can detect targets such as fighters, missiles, helicopters and drones. This radar can also detect low and fast flying targets, as well as targets using stealth technology.

GM400a uses Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) technology that allows this radar to scan an area simultaneously and provide a more accurate picture of the air situation around the radar. This radar is also equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities that can assist in target detection and tracking.

Several countries have purchased GM400a, including Indonesia and Malaysia. In Indonesia, the GM400a will be placed in Biak, Papua, to monitor the airspace in the border area between Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. In Malaysia, the GM400a will be deployed in Bintulu, Sarawak, to monitor airspace over coastal waters and the Malaysian Exclusive Economic Zone.

Key capabilities of the GM400a radar include:

• Detection range of up to 515km.
• Detection height of up to 30,000 metres.
• Can detect targets such as fighters, missiles, helicopters and drones.
• Can detect low and fast flying targets
• Can detect targets using stealth technology.
• Using AESA technology
• Equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities

GM400a is a sophisticated air defence radar and can provide effective protection for a country’s airspace.***
